Hon. W. Pember Peeves arrived at Stratford at 4 o’clock to-day on a visit of inspection of the National Bank, He will tour tlie Stratford district to-morrow and will afterwards proceed to New Plymouth. The official rainfall record for Stratford for the month of January shows that during the month there were 13 wet days. The heaviest being on January 1 when I.94ins were recorded. The total rainfall for the month was; 7.8-Jins. In January 1.D20 there were 8 wet days and a total rainfall of 3.62in5. This is written to the Herald about Wanganui, but it fits Stratford like a glove:—Many people are asking it something cannot be done to put an end to the distracting noise made by motor cycles late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Night after night people are disturbed by the clatter as of the rapid fire of d machine gun. One has hardly time to settle down again in search of sleep before another hideous machine races hy. Speed limits appear to be badly broken hy the riders of these roaring machines, and as for using silencers such a thought never occurs to them. No wonder nervous diseases are on the increase, when, hundreds of people are disturbed several times each night by thoughtless reckless motor cyclists. The menace to sleep and health, and to the lives of people who ma v; ho using the roads, is becoming unbearable, and drastic steps should he taken tol overcome it. An bmpty car left standing in a street over the. prescribed time leads to the owner being fined, hut such a breach of the law; is negligible compared with the real harm done by the nerve-racking hideous spin tterings of motor cycles.
