MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board mot at New Plymouth yesterday. Present S. G. Smith, M.P. (chairman), P. J. H. White, A. Lees, F. H. Sim, B. ,J. Dcare, H. Dempsey and the Uev. J. L. A. Kayll. Leave of absence was granted to Mr H. J. Eaves.

The chairman reported having made the following relieving appointments during the month;—Mis.s E. Burkhart, sole teacher, Tokirima; Mr L. DesEorges, sole teacher, lhaia ; Air G. W. Graham, sole teacher, Kirihau; -Miss E. MacMillan, assistant, Douglas; Mr P. S. Taylor, head teacher, Malioc; Miss A. Kelleher, assistant, Central; Miss V, MacDonald, csolo teacher, Mahirakau; Mr J. Craig, head teacher, Erankley • Miss G. Leech, infant mistress, Moturoa; Miss G. Barak, assistant, Bahotu; Miss E. O’Sullivan, assistant, Opunake; Miss A. Kollcrher. assistant, Tawhiti. Appointments were made as follows; Central, infants, Mr s .1 .Larkin ; Central, Mrs Firth; Waitara, Miss J. G. Dement; Mahoe, Mr A. J. Carroll; Mahirakau, Mr F. W. Kerr.

Sewing mispresses were appointed as follows:—Ackland, Mrs J. Taylor (May 8 to June 30, 1925), Miss Oldridge, as from July I, 1925; Hupurua, Mi's H. S. Kibblewhite, as from May '22, 1925; Opatu, Mrs ]?. Paulson, as from June, 1925.

The resignation of Miss G. McMillan, assistant, Douglas, to take eifoet from July 29 was received and accepted.,

Agricultural instruction during the past month was reported, on by Die senior agiiculturai instructor (Mr R G. Ridiuig) Shows.—displays of the work done in the schools were mad© during the month at both the New Plynioutn and the Hawera. .Shows. ' . ;, li Reporting on new work, the arclii- r tect (Mr O. H. Moore) stated "tljat tlie improved conveniences at Stanley, 0 Anroa and Pihama were just about Y completed. At Stanley he had instal- 6 led an electric pumping outfit. At -Anroa lie had to fall back on a windmill as it would probably be ait least two yearg before electric power would reach that part. He wa« installing a P pumping outfit at Pihama similar to JVj the one at Opunake. The sanitary f ( conditions at these schools should be every satisfactory, and the progressive spirit of the committees was to be * commended. 81 The attendance officer (Mr G. The sub-committee of the hoard appointed to g 6 into the- question of school prizes stated in a supplementary report: “We duly conferred with the members of the School Committees’ Association and Head Teachers’ Association in regard to the distribution of prizes. It appears the resolution of the Head Masters’ Association in October last did not purport to abolish prizes, but affirmed the desirability of their elimination. AVe are of opinion that in districts where tlie school committees wish to give prizes, the head teacher should carry out the wishes of the committee and assist iu the matter to the best of l* s ability.” —The report was received. It was decided to advise the Auckland Education Board that the Taranaki Board wa« in sympathy with the

principle underlying its resolution recommending a half-yearly winter course of cultural and technical instruction for' .students over 1.5 years of age in district and technical high .schools, and to say that thg Taranaki Hoard will take whatever action appears necessary to give effect thereto. The Hoard expressed itself in sympathy with the movement to revive Old English songs and folk dances, and decided to recommend the Education Department to advise exchange i teachers going to England'of the host ( method of gaining practical experience. ‘ 1 GENERAL. 1 ft was decided to make application t to the department, for (subsidies as t follows, the hoard to contribute tins £ amounts indicated in parentheses:— j.
