DROVER’S BAD LUCK

“About £lls of my debts are for medical and chchiist’s bills, and 1 have paid tlire or four times that amount during the past six years for the same purpose,” said Leonard Charles Hewson, a bankrupt drover, of Stratford. when under examination by the Deputy Official Assignee (Mr J. S, S. Medley) yesterday. There wore no creditors present, and the meeeting consequently lapsed. The bankrupt’s statement of his assets and liabilities showed debts totalling £282 15s, all owing to unsecured creditors. Assets were set out as furniture valued at £30,, a horse valued at £4 and three dogs valued at £5, leaving a nett deficiency at £243 15s.

In the course of a written statemont bankrupt said be was a married man with a wife and throe children living. Since 1919, his wife had been almost constantly in illllealth, necessitating surgical and inedical treatment, which bankrupt detailed, while in recent years two of his children had had to bo admitted to hospital. He had moved around to try- to find a climate suitable for his wife but without-avail. The continuous medical expenses and the fact that, if he had to go- away from home, he had to employ someone to look after his wife prevented him. from getting ahead of his debts and was, in fact, pushing him further behind, he regretted he could not make ah offer to his creditors. Examined under oath, the bankrupt said that since Christmas his wages had averaged £3 12s 6d a. week. He was paying 27s Gd a week rent for his house at Stratford. He had been forced to file through some of his creditors taking out judgment summonses against him.
