HEAVY TRAFFIC

DISTRIBUTION OF FEES. LOCAL BODIES' ASSOCIATION. At the meeting of the Stratford Borough Council last evening, the Town Clerk (Mr P. Skoglund) reported as follows on the above question: At a meeting of the Taranaki Local Bodies' Association held at Eltham on 29th ult. a simple and, in my opinion, an equitable basis of distribution of licensing fees was adopted for recommendation to all local authorities in the No. 8 Highway District. The distribution is based on the proportion the mileage of roads and capital value of each constituent district bears to the total mileage of roads and the total capital value of the whole Highway District. The amounts due under the mileage and capital value proportions are added together and 50 per cent of this total is the local authority's share of the total fees collected over the whole district. This arrangement is to be for one year only, and in the meantime every Jerry driver to keep a record of his trips in accordance with the regulations issued by the Government. It was decided that the distribution be made quarterly, and the Town Clerk, Eltham, and the Secretary of the Association were appointed to | make the allocation..

Tyres.—lt was decided that Inspectors bo instructed to accept width of tyres at present on vehicles to be licensed until same are being replaced . Local Authorities' Vehicles.—lt was decided to recommend that exemption be granted to lorries owned by local authorities. Weights of Vehicles.—As there will be some difficulty in arriving at the weight of the different vehicles to be licensed it was decided to ask the Highways Board to prepare a. list for the convenience of local authorities. Egmont National Park Board.—A deputation from the Board waited on the conference asking for a grant of £SOO from the local authorities in Taranaki, the amount to be contributed to be based .on the capjtal value of ,the respective districts. It was decided to recommend that the request be granted. The Stratford Borough Council's share would he £l6. The report was adopted.
