W.C.T.U.
The- annual Provincial Convention of the W.O.T.U. was held at Waitara on Wednesday last, about forty delegates from various' unions in the province being present. A large number arrived on Tuesday evening, and were publicly welcomed* at Knox Church I by His Worship the Mayor (Mr Morgaii), on be flail of that citizens of Wai--1 car a, Messrs Kedgley and league, 1 the Lieutenant of the* Salvation Army, Mr Grin steed (N.Z. Alliance), and Mr Vaughan, local president of the Alliance., ■ Mrs Duxfiekl, of Wanganui. the district president, in replying, traced the history of the W.C.T.XT., stating that it was now a world-wide organisation which is working in the cause of God and Humanity. She thanked the speakers for their unbounded welcome. During the evening vocal items were rendered by Mesdames ) Foster and Love-ridge. I The business session commenced on I Wednesday morning by devotions led Iby Mrs Duxfield. Reports from various Unions showed a very substantial increase in the number of White Ribbon subscribers and also a suc- ! cessful year’s progress, i The President, Mrs Diixfield, gave i a. very inspiring address, stressing the I need for co-operation of workers, and | to secure new members for unions. | Mr« Craig made an earnest appeal 1 for funds for the proposed Sailors’ | Rest at New Plymouth. The. Five Minutes Speech Compctiiion drew a number of competitrns. and some intcivsiing speeches resulted, the- prize bring gained by Mrs Piper, of Wain ganui.. In the evening;, a public meeting was held, the speakers being the Rev. Horace Lindsay. Vicar of Inglewood, and Mr Grinsteed.
