A MELBOURNE HOAX.
Melbourne, October 16.
As the guests at Menzios Hotel l were returning from the theatres last night, a youu,£_ man strode into the hall of the hotel, declared that, ho was a detective from Newcastle, and demanded to see Mr John Brown, the New South Wales coal mine owner, on important business. As authority, he produced what seemed, at first glance, to be a wicked-look-ing automatic pistol, but which proved later to be a. tin toyi.
The young man gained a few moments' interview with Mr Brown in a downstairs room. As a result of ' the escapade J. young man living at Elsternwick. the son of a well-known business man, will be summoned on a charge of offensive behaviour. ———mi mm i
