KANGAROOS IN MILLIONS

SHEEP OUTNUMBERED. SITUATION IN W.A. Perth, September 1. Kangaroos in battalions "like a grey moving mirage," were talked of to-day by a deputation of north-west pastoralists to-day, in a request to the Government to abolish the royalty on kangaroo skins. For every million sheep in the northwest it was said there two million kangaroos, and they were eating some of the stations out of feed and spoiling the water supplies. It was stated that one hunter last year had bagged 100,000 kangaroos, while another had taken double this number over two' years. The official supposition that the natives would starve if the kanagroo went was baseless, for the natives would not eat the flesh now that they had become used to beef and mutton. It was contended that with the present royalty of 9d a pound on dry skins, and 2d on. reds, hunting was not profitable. The Minister promised consideration.
