DOMAIN BOARD

TKE MONTHLY MEETING. The Domain Board meeting last evening was attended bv the Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan) and Crs. Ward, Ruthorfurd, Finnerty, Nelson, Dawson, McDonald, Lamason and Mr P. Thomson. The Caretaker I.Mr A. Rone) reported on the general work for the month. Native shrubs had been planted in King' Edward Park. He suggested that a small shed be erected i n Victoria Park for keeping • tools, etc., also a lawn mower. Do- j ruUions of "shrubs had been received from Mrs A. Stewart and Mr Neilson (Cordelia Street); flowers from Mr S. Reader (Orlando Street) 1 and Mr L. Reader (Regan Street), these all being choice plants which were greatly appreciated. The caretaker drew attention to the circulation of circulars by the Sports and Pastimes Club on the day of the Tara-naki-Wairarapa Rugby match, and suggested that in future thes/e be circulated outside the ground when the game was over. A. vote of thanks was passed to the donors of flowers and shrubs. It was resolved to procure a lawn mover for the caretaker. The Borough staff was granted permission to use the Park for a football match on Thursday. Tt was resolved to prohibit the distribution of circulars in the Park, and that refuse receptacles be placed i round the tennis, children's, and main grounds. DRAIN-PLOUGHING v. TELES. The Mayor said in regard to drain ploughing the Park that a. Wairarapa man told him it would not bo a success, and the only cure would be by tile-draining. The Board need not go to much expense in the first year, and could start with tapping the low parts: of the ground. Mr Thomson, asked when a start would he made with the! cricket pitch i as the special soil was to hand. —The j Mayor replied that the work would be 1 gone on. with. I Cr. Ward said he had made arrange- i ments with Mr Hunt, of Pembroke j R 0.5.1, who had had experience of| drain: ploughing to inspect the ground in company with Mr Sayers, and asked that decision be deferred until this expert advice was received. The drain ploughing oni the Pembroke Road was not so successful as it was in the Wairarapa. { It was resolved to leave the matter; in the hands of the Works Committee. PARK IMPROVEMENTS. Cr. Ward moved that the Overseer be empowered to erect two swingboats for the children. The cost i would be very small. Seconded by Cr. Lamason and carried. Cr. Ward moved that a. sand-pit bo constructed for tlie children. The Mayor strbngly objected from the sanitary point of view. Cr. Ward' "remarking- that His Worship was out-of-date. I There was no seconder of the mo-! tion, which lapsed. j Cr. Finnerty asked where the pavi-1 lion wouhl be «'*ected. This would J have to be considered in the near j future. Cr. Nelson said the hockey ground should h" taken over, as the commit- 1 tee's w>rk was completed. j Cr, Finnerty said the grounds com-1 niittee should he abolished! and the j powers revert to the Works Commit-. tee. —Agreed to. I Thanks were expressed to Crs. Nel- i son and Finnertv for their work on j th<* hockey ground. ,i It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Ward to secure an estimate of the I cost of a\ motor mower and roller, combined, Cr. Ward intimating that' there was a proposal on hand to raise funds from the public for the Park improvement. ' The Mayor said the first requisite was a pavilion. TREE PLANTING. Regarding the Warwick Road Re-i serve, Cr. Finnerty said some action should be taken to erect a break wind. Borne of the trees were affected by the, salt spray some time ago. ' Cr. Ward said some of the gullies in the borough should be planted, and he again urged the establishment of a municipal nursery. | The Mayor said it was very neces- ! sary, but they could not do every- • thing at onoe.
