OPENING OF FLOCK HOUSE.
HOME FOR SONS OF SEAMEN.
\ Per Pw»« Association, Wellington, July 19
At Bulls yesterday Viscount Jellicoe formally opened Flock House, which with an estate of 1200 acres, was acquired ly Dominion sheepowners as a training ground for the sons of seamen lost in the war. There was a large attendance, including people from as far awa y as Canterbury.
Mr T. R. Lees, managing trustee, welcomed the Governor-Genefal, and sat’d they had an engine-room telegraph from H.M.S. New Zealand with which he asked Viscount Jellicoe »o signal ‘‘Full steam ahead.’” The Governor, in his Admiral’s uniform, said the idea of Flock House'was a most happy inspiration on the part of 2000 New Zealand sheep-owners.
Addressing the hoys, who anm already in residence, he told them thad British seamen were the salt of the earth, and they had to live up lo that reputation, and make the House a success. Let them also make up their minds to be Ministers of the Crown. He was sure that among them there would te a future Prime Minister. Amid applause, the Governor then set the telegraph “full steam ahead,”
The Hon. Nosworthy said the sight of the greatest Admiral of the greatest Fleet sp°akmg to the sons of seamen who had lost their lives had made profound impression upon him. He paid a high tril ute to the j part the Hon. E Newman had plav- 1 "d ip acquiring the estate. The Governor’s prediction might easily ho ccoinplished. for both Mr Massoy j n r | Mr G’Uhrie had driven the i plough in their 1 time, the latter upon that very estate. The Governor-General, in the course of his remarks, said that, two things struck him;'firstlv. the spirit of generosity which brought the fund into being; secondly, the fact that during the slump the low prices which obtained did not prevent the 2600 sheepowners from supporting the .fund. The Hon W. Nosworthy (Minister for Immigration) stated that the department would assist the work in, every possible way.
