SUBSTANCE IN BEER

HEAVY FINE IMPOSED. At the Palmerston North Magistrate's Court, before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., Annie Baker was charged that, on December 4, 1923, at Palmerston North, she did sell a food, to wit, beer, containing a substance. Salicylic, and which is prohibited by regulations. Mr Laurenson, who appeared for defendant, pleaded guilty. The acid, he explained, had been added to the beer merely as a preserwitiivei and not with any object of damaging the liquor in any way. Tiie Magistrate, commenting that the substance was not pernitte] bv the regulations, imposed a fine of £lO and costs.
