INDIAN LIBEL ACTION
DYER AT AMRITSAR. AN HOUR OF PERIL. I* London, May JThe hearing of the libel action in which Sir Michael 0 Dwyer, e\Licutenant Governor of the Punjab, is suing Sir Chettur Sankaran Naif in respect to allegations i n latter’s book, “Ghandi and Anarchy,” was continued in the King’s ,bench division. Counsel for the defence raised the issue- as to the propriety of General Dyer’s action. Mr Justice McCardie asked; “If what Dyer did was necessary for the prevention of anarchy, can it be said to be wrong?” and added, “If live hundred were killed halt a million were saved. The police bad completely lost, control. You seem to he ignoring the grave consecpiencfs that might have followed if Dyer’s force had been destroyed.” Later Mr Justice MeOardi** interposed that he could not see a distinction in principle between a policeman’s bludgeon and a soldier's rifle or a-, aviator’s bomb in suppressing a rebel lion.
