NEW ZEALAND BUTTER

CO M P ETITI ON ' WITH DAN IS M ON

HOME MARKET.

The high price of Danish butter has given rise to controversy on tho respective merits and demerits ot the Danish product as compared with other makes, and in particular that of the New Zealand dairies, states the “Manchester Guardian.' So far as the actual quality of New, Zealand butter is concerned, it i s equal to Danish, ami generally admitted to contain a. higher percentage pf butter-fat than Danish or any other batter ad nitted to the English n arl: t. ’ill mv 5. In ;vcr, a certain amount of pr.'.iiulice and considerably more ignorance in butter buying by the public who have given the Danish product an exalted position among th© various makes o butter available. Lancashire absorbs th e best classes of provisions, the industrial centres taking the choicest qualities of dairy produce available; therefore V'c competition for what is commonly accepted as the best l-u*t«r is very keen.

In reference to Danish butter, it should be appreciated that this has hben regularly and systematically imported into this country for more than twenty years, and is accepter?! as a standard of the best imported butter packed in casks. So firm has the Danish butter farmer entrenched his product in the British market that he is able t D command a higher premium than the comparatively recently developed trade wth the New Zealand farmers. Furthermore, Now Zealand butter is boxed to facilitate its transport during a longer sea route than the Danish. This form of packing does not appeal to the average importer. It is estimated that taking these points into consideration Danish butter might bo worth from Id to Id per pound more than New Zealand. Now Zealand butter arrives in England in perfect condition, and is kept in cold storage until required for distribution This butter can I>e handled all the year round, although the bulk of arrivals take place between December and June The high pric a of Danish butter practically precludes the retailer from a fair profit, which he is row in a position to make on the New Zealand qualities.
