COMMON GAMING HOUSE. Per Press Association Wellington, November 22. The police recently raided premises in Riddiford Street and made some arrests on a charge of using the building as a common gaming house. Light fines were imposed except in the case or G. A. Brown. In evidence the police stated he had taken £7OO after the Christchurch and Ashburton races, and a further sum over the Ashhurst meeting. As two months ago he was fined £4O, the Magistrate this time inflicted a fine of £75.
BREACH OF PROMISE. Christchurch, November 24. At the Supreme Court, Isabella Anna McMillan, of Ashburton, was awarded £4OO damages against Gordon Harrison, of Ashburton, for broach of promise of marriage. The parties became engaged in September, 1921, and the marriage was fixed for July 18, 1922. A child was born on July 5. On the day fixed for the marriage defendant repudiated the contract.
