Watersiders' Wages
A UNION PROTEST. Per Press Association, / r ' Wellington,' November 23. Mr Roberts, president of tue Vv ater■siders’ Federation, has issued a, statement. denouncing the judgment of the Arbitration Court which he calls “a sentence.” He says the Court has not given them justice, and has inflicted on them many economic hardships; and for that reason the waterside workers have finished with the Arbitration Court for all time. The judgment of the Court was , a judgment on the Court itself. The award will be submitted to the whole of the watcrsfilers. for their approval or otherwise, as no self-respecting official could honestly advise the men to accept t£e wages and conditions, which mean sure starvation. Regarding the new preference clause he says the Court has given the unions a death-blow, for it has definitely stated that the amount payable per anjmm shall not exceed £1 or 4Jd per week. This means that the unions cannot carry on—they must either forego their preference clause or dissolve the unions.
