County Matters.

TO-DAY’S MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was hold this morning. THE MATAU DISTRICT. The chairman reported on the conference held on Tuesday last Avith representatives from the Matau district, lie and Or Anderson representing the Council. Matters were fully discussed, but no decision Avas come to. He asked for another month in which to prepare a report, and in the interim be and Or Anderson would visit the district.

Thd extra time in which to report was granted. STRATHMORE TUNNELS. The chairman reported having with the Engineer recently interviewed the Minister for Public Works (Hon. Coates) in reference to the proposal for the making of tunnels at the Strathmore Saddle. The Minister was quite agreeable that- the grant of £6OO for metalling should stand if nothing was done about the tunnels. He yms sympathetic towards the tunnels,-and seemed to think they would bo good business; but he could promise-nothing .until he had h> a en-gmeer’-B report. ; .V'% U-O-t’-.W -,-sv-Srr .-,/fT ‘ ■ t FINNERTY ROAD CORNER.

It~ was decided to ask Mr George Sparkes to set a price on sixteen feet of his land on the corner oj Finnerty Road, near th© factory, the Council being desirous of improving the corner. A DANGEROUS SPOT. Cr Thomas suggested that a danger signal be placed at a point about two chaips below the , Cornwall Road junction with the Mountain Road. The,.signal should face Eltham. If anybody turned out of Cornwall Road hig view of vehicles coming from Eltham was obscured by a very hlgn bank. It Was decided that a sign be erected. NGAERE STRAIGHTENING. 1 . The chairman said he had inspected the road, and saw no reason to change the route. The work might ho done if the Council had a lot of money which it did not know what to do with. ,

Or Anderson suggested that there were other place s in the County which were more entitled to attention—some of the roads in the chairman’s Riding for instance.

There wag ho seconder to the motion, and nothing was done. TOURIST TRAFFIC. Tlie chdirraan said ho had seen where a Government subsidy of £IOO had been granted for the road bo the North Fgraont Mountain House. He was surprised that no subsidy was granted for the Dawson’s Falls Hoad. It was decided to approach Mr R. Masters, M.P., on the matter, and to procure statistics of the motor car a passing over the road. CARDIFF ROADS. Or Belcher reported that the roads in the vicinity of Cardiff were showing the effects of the dry weather, there being plenty of loose stones on the surface. The Waingongoro Road was especially had. The chairman said tenders had been called for work on the Waingongoro Road, and one* accepted, but the tenderer did/ not go on with the work. The matter of _procuring boulders for the Waingongoro Road tras left in the hands of the Riding members and the Engineer. roadside scrub. Or O’Neill moved that notice be served on certain residents of Cheal Road to clear their frontages of scrub. He had heard of accidents

through beasts suddenly appearing from thig scrub. The Engineer is to look irAo the matter. HOSPITAL BOARD, It was decided to recon i mend to the Government to appoint Mr G. P. Harkness, of Midhirst, as a representative of the County on the Hospital Board. FLINT ROAD EAST. The Town Clerk, Stratford, notified that the Borough Council 1 - intended to metal and tar-seal about twenty chains of Flint Road East, westward from thie Borough boundary, and asked for the County’s approval. Approval wag granted. HOSPITAL PATHS. The secretary of the Hospital Board (Mr T. H. Penn) wrote that the Board would be glad to have the 200 yards of shell-rock promised for tho Hospital roadway as soon a 8 convenient. It was decided to reply that the metal would bo supplied, providing arrangements could be made for taking delivery, FINNERTY ROAD BRIDGE. In reply to Or Were, the Engineer said tho decking was how being put on tlie Finnerty Road bridge. FOREMAN RESIGNS. The resignation of Foreman Rogers (Douglas) was received and accepted.
