SURPLUS WOOL.

AMD THE BRITISH NAVY. To recognise the debt which the ’ Dominion; owes, tot the sailojfs’ tolPtbe ftoyal Navy and the Mercantile 'Marine, a scheme was initiated in July, d 91.8, under which Sheepowners would donate all' or portion of their profits from the, sale of surplus wool in England to a fund to be called “The New Zealand Sheepowners’ Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund” for the benefit of dependents of sailors of the British Navy and Mercantile Marine who have been wounded or have lost their lives in the defence of the Empire. The practical interest manifested by woolgrowers throughout the Dominion in this appeal was very general, and insubstantial* sum should be available in the near future for the objects of the scheme. -In view of the Prime Minister’s recent public announcement that a distribution of wool profits is shortly to be made, a notice appears in another column of this issue drawing the attention of Sheepowners who have donated surplus wool profits to this fund to a meeting of contributors which will bo held in the Old Chamber, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, on Wednesday. August, 13th, at 10 a.ui. The objects of the meeting as outlined in the notice referred to arc such, as will be of much interest to contributors and of considerable impel tance to the movement, and it is hoped that a large number of contributors will bo present. Whilst drawing attention to this meeting the Trustees desire to take the opportunity of earnestly appealing for the sympathetic arid generous support of those Sheepowners who have not

already contributed to the fund. During the great war New Zealand i looked to the merchant ships manned by sailors of the mercantile (Marine to keep her export trade I alive, and she looked to the (Royal i.Vavy to guard those ships, and I whilst ive applaud the magnificent ’ .-pint of the British sailors, we must i:,;i 1 argot the great debt the coun(iry ow es to them. Sheepowners who (have no! already contributed and who : wish t*> assign portion or whole of I their wool profits or make a donation I air, form are requested to communicate with the Honorary Sec re- I [tar.) Hex 1109, 'Wellington, who will gladly give any farther information j that may be desired.
