Clemenceau as the incorporation of French Chauvinism and hatred, has interpreted his defeat as a desire on the part of influential French politicians for an altered policy towards Germany. < The newspapers, however, warn the public that M’, Clemenceau’s defeat does not imply the defeat of his politics. The consensus of opinion is that Deschanel’s elecion is of a really represntative character. The majority of the newspapers express satisfaction with the result. Some circles propose to make M. Clemenceau a life senatoi. and others suggest presenting him with a large estate and castle. President Poincare, after conferring with M. Deschanel and M. Bourgeois, commissioned M. Aiillerand' ro form a. Cabinet.
,M. Clemenceau will no longer he able to represent France at the Peace Conference. He says he is going to Egypt in a few days, anti will remain there for, two months. His departure will probably entail the break up of the conference of the .Council of Three, yv ,
It is expected that Mr Lloyd George and the British Mission will soon return to London and not return until the political position in France is cleared up. It i s thought that Finnic, the Turkish problem, and other grave matters are , still undecided.
There was a moving scene at the Elysee when M. Clemenceau handed his resignation tq, President Poincare.,, The latter thanked “The Tiger” for his great services. He said: “You galvanised the energies of the country in difficult years. Your tireless tenacity made final victory possible.”
