Melbourne Cup, a handicap sweepstakes/f 30sovs, witii 6000 sovs. added and cup valued at £150; second 1200hovk, and third 600 sovs from stakes. Two miles—Night watch (6.9) 1, Kenaquhair (9.01 2, Gadabout (8.7) 3. In the early stages Desert Gold was fifth, and at the river was fourth. Gadabout led into the straight from Nightwatch, with Finmark seventh. Nightwatcli drew out at the distance, and won brilliantly, in record time by half a length. Finmark was fourth and Desert Gold eighth. '1 hue, 3.25;}. Esthuul was' scratched.

THE METROPOLITAN MEETING. Christehureh, November 5. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Chih’s spring meeting opened to-day in fine but dull weather. There was a large attendance, and the track was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £52,091 10s, as against £17,335 on the opening day of last year. Results:— Empire Handicap.—l Schnapps 1, I Peter Mae 2, 3 Commander Bell 3. Won by three lengths. Time, 4.-18. Spring Handicap—7 Treasure Seeker 1, 6 Beeswing 2, 8 Chub 3. Won by two lengths. Time, 1.50 1-5. Now Zealand Trotting Clip.— 2 Author Dillon 1, 1 Matchlight 2, 0 Sungod 3. Also started: I Monoj-4 maker, 1 Cathedra! Chimes, Sherwood | (coupled with Matchlight), 8 Admiral Wood, 2. John .Dillon (coupled with' winner), 5 Adelaide Direct; 7 Aga-j thus, 3 Emilios. Sungod and Money-j maker piloted the Held to the thiee furlongs from home. Author Dillon then took charge, and won com tort- ( ably hy six lengths, Sungod being a length in front of Moneymaker, who heat Emilius for fourth place hy the same distance. Time, 1.2(5 2-5. Riecarton Handicap.—2 General Link I. (5 Vice-Admiral 2. Mon hy 50yds. Time, 3.52 2-5. Pitaroa fell three furlongs from home, and lamarisk, Irvar, and Cora Dillon topplod over him.
