There were numerous victims. Although there had been many alarms in the previous two days, the inhabitants did not believe that the enemy would attack open towns while an armistice was pending. Cl A' Berlhl' correspondent states that Germany through the Swiss Government proposed to the other belligerents the cessation of aerial attacks in the rear zone, on the ground of humanity and the preservation oi monuments and civilisation. The writer says that the German aviators were ordered to cease attacks at tiie beginning of October.
