> COST OF LIVING QUESTION. additional WAR bonus. Wellington, October 31. A very important decision lias been arrived at 'owing to the greatly increased cost of living. The Government has been considering the question of pay and war bonus tf/ officers in the Public Service, and it has been determined to place on tho Estimates for tills year the sum of £589,000 in addition to the ordinary scale jof increases ot salary to which the j Public Servants are entitled micrer ' the classification scheme and also in ! addition to the existing war bonus. ; The amount expended in war bonus ! last year in the Service amounted to £463,000, and it will therefore he seen that the total extra amount to fbe paid - L o Public Servants consequent i upon the increased cost of living due to the war is represented by roughly £1,000,000 per annum. The additional sum, £589,000, provides for increased pay to cadets upon entering the Setvice, additional bonus to officers of the Railway Department, increased pay for the Police Porcc, increased pay and bonuses to -teachers and j others in the Education Department, increased pay in the Prisons Departj ment, special promotions in the Serj vice recommended by the Commisi siouer, and an additional war bonus | throughout tho rest of the Service, i These extra emoliutopnts ""'ill he ' granted to the lower-paid officials in the Service, ami it is hoped the inI creased pay and bonuses referred to ! will have the effect of relieving Civil , Servants of the difficulties which they f have recently experienced owing to | the greatly increased cost of living | duo to the war.
