Anglers are usually classed as “feckless” bodies by thoss who never felt tlie hire of stream and rod, but three well-known frequenters of the Wai-
mate Acclimatisation Society’s reserve at Glc.nayy have proved the contrary to a surprising degree. One, aged 85 years, built stacks for Mr I. Cuthbortson. The. sheaves were forked to him by a man of over cO, while another man of 70 years of age did the leading in. Their average age was over 75 years.
A man who took part in the capture of Gaza has sent home the following description of the Turkish positions before the city: “Immediately behind the barbed wire, were the front line trenches. How anyone could have existed in them would puzzle a Zulu, for they wore built anyhow. The material consisted of flour-hags and cus-hion-covers. The latter were in every size and shape and the colours in every shade it is possible to imagine. The material changed from cheap chintzes to fine silk, with patterns worked in gold and silver threads.”
In view of accidents to people who indulge in sea bathing, it is interesting to read that Dr A. Randor Lawadeki, of Honolulu, has invented a. swimming glove. It is a webbed glove, which makes a veritable duck’s foot of the human hand. When swimming, the gloved hands are spread out at each backward stroke, and closed each time they are, brought forward. According to the inventor, a swimmer equipped with these cannot only out-distance other swinimeis, but the hands enable him to stay up for hours with only a slight exertion.

Central America is,4he land of the glad hand, judging by the, following story - sent from New York, giving a new version of the rise of 1* rederieo Tinoso to President of Costa Rica. Tinoso was Minister of War, and Altrodo Gonzales was President. One morning Tinoso entered the President’s office and extended his hand to Gonzales. The, President grasped it, whereupon Tinoso jerked him out of the Presidential chair. Tinoso sat down in the President’s place, drew two revolvers, with which he began shooting, and ordered Gonzales out of the room and out of the, country. Gonzales fled.
