STRATFORD RACING CLUB.

NEW YEAR MEETING. (Notes by Cicero.) The annual fixture of the above club takes place to-morrow and promises to eclipse any other held by the Club, despite the fact that fifty per I cent of .racing had to be sacrificed by t oi'der of the District Committee, to 1 cpmply, with war regulations. The ! procedure recommended by the Racing Conference and adopted by District Committees in the granting of permits to race is, in the writer’s opinion, most inequitable and unfair. Take, a case in point: Grcymouth was allow-, ed to race on three days at New Year. The amount of stakes given by this Club for the three days is £I7BO. A trifle over £590 per day. The Stratford Club is. giving in stakes for its one day £1650. Totalisator investments for Greymouth on the three days last year were £17,179. Stratford put through £43,328 during two days last year. To my way of reasoning the Government should have cancelled all existing racing permits. Clubs would then have had to make application for so many days to race on, and a board of, say, three, including the Chairman of the Racing Conference and two other members of that body could issue licenses. Under this form it would not be possible for a growing town dike Stratford or a progressive Club such as it possesses, to suffer injustice that wo at preent experience.

Reverting to the coming meeting the Club may have difficulty in accommodating the crowd, and very soon the appointments will want .enlarging, and bringing more in con-, formity to the importance of the meeting. The racing track is in splendid order, and is a credit to Caretaker Lloyd. The, fields promise to be big, and winners are well concealed. The first event will start at 11.30, and the Club intend to run strictly to time. The following figure in the

BOROUGH STAKES, of 100 SOVS. (W.F.A.) Five Furlongs.

Miss Ora, Emaline, Genskus, Hetman, Cyinro, Mimire, Giiianform, Piano, Silver Link, Anserine, Golden Nugget, Kemra, Awarua, Renounce, Rifle, Fire, Beaufort, Coronita, Alice, Montrose, Key, Royal Divorce, Lady Glide, Self Alliance, Hushlad, Oika, Staccato, Reopai, Glome, Kaimanawamii.

Staccato showed brilliancy at Manawatu, and should this equine bo produced, will touch a very short price. In the absence of the Waver ley trained one, Silver Link should be favonte. Included in this are a number of good “Hacks,” but once again the actual starters are hard to pick. Royal Chef is hardly as brilliant as' of yore, but is still capable of gal-l loping fast. Marqueteur, who raced successfully for the late Hon. J. D. Ormond, Pergola, a winner at the* late Taranaki meeting, and Pink Tie,, who won a double at Tauranga res cehtly, all gallop fast. Possibly Royal Chef and Pergola will have most) friends.

race in the annals of the Club. Par* aoa 8.6., who holds pride of place,. !is quite entitled to that honor. ll© has put up scire good performances' of late, and n-u a capital race for IV miles in - .e Auckland Cup last ' Wednesday, ii a starter, and look-j ■ iiig bright, the writer intends having' an investment on the son of King I i Rufus. Orleans at -libs less is nice-, j j 1 v handicapped. At Ashurst live (weeks ago, lie finished third under j 8.3 in the Cup,, and also pan a good' [race at Feilding a week later. On'j i appearance he is well. Mnniaroa' would run well on a soft-track. White Blaze won nieely at Waverley,, get-, ting to the end of ten furlongs under 8.10, running the seven furlongs im (1.29. Both are good performances,, land many contend that the j gelding is capable of a much better performance, than the showing made at New Plymouth. Iceberg, like Maniaroa is now partial to soft tracks. He is an honest gelding, hut may find the class too good. Bushman is not running on at all well just now, and possibly the Douglas Handicap will he his mission. Crawford won the same event last year under 8.2, ' so, on the handicap, is well in. Gol-t den Grafton ran a creditable race at' J Waverley, where she finished third,, hut her form this season has been bao. King Chiara was produced in the Flying at. New Plymouth, but failed to run prominently. This, gelding bobs up when unexpected by the* public. Munster 7.5 is the best handicapped horse in the race, and must* ho one of the hardest to beat. Dingle is another, much fancied by his immediate connections. Ho is a stablemate of King Chiara. Zetes will probably start in the Hurdles. Altera-* tion is much in the boom. He pub up a couple of good performances at New, Plymouth, particularly in the* Plying, where he finished close up ini 1.14: His party are confident and have backed him To win a fair sum. in “doubles.” The course may nob be in favour of this long-striding colt. Lady Beaufort finished very fast, at Now Plymouth, and many “hard heads” are going to be on her'toH morrow. Fidelo, other than, breed- 1 ing, has nothing as a recommend.*.-* tion for a race of this description.' Hushabye on the minimum’is working! well, but may be troubled by the distance. Parana, Munster and Alteration are a likely lot. The acceptance received for the Olmra Hack Hurdles must be very gratifying to the mem-* bers, who advocated retaining this event on the programme.
