The receipts of the Pacific Cable j Hoard for 1916—17 exceeded the ex- ' penditnre by £90,926, but the contribution to the renewal fund increased co £'90,000, and £IO,OOO was contributed to the provident, fund to meet depreciation in the securities wherein these were invested, leaving a surplus of £4231.. Nearly nine millions of paying words in the international i traffic were transmitted in addition to 6,500,000 sent free. Respecting the ivoimded soldiers' traffic :;between ' Australia and New Zealand-and the Pacific islands, it comprised 1,795,200■ words. The amount of international business represents the cables' maximum capacity, and cannot be materially exceeded unless new systems arc invented to increase the speed on long! •ables.
