SUNK IN THE IRISH CHANNEL. | 101 LIVES LOST. Thf Admiralty reports that the !. need boarding steamer named Step--1,0.. !•’nmess was submarined and (sunk in the Irish Channel, and that 101 officers and men were lost. ON WATCH IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. ;Press Association —Copyrignt, Aniltalian and N.Z. Cable Association Athens, December 21. Destroyers surprised submarines which were half-submerged, and intently watching for their prey, but j they did not notice the destroyers approach. One submarine was rammed i and sank .immediately, and a des- * trover shelled and smashed the conning tower of the second, the crew abandoning the submarine. LOSS OF CHATEAU RENAULT. Paris, December 21. The Chateau Renault was torpedoed iu the lonian Sea. The torpedo struck the vessel on the starboard side, and the engine rooms filled with water. The submarine reappeared on the port side, and fired a second torpedo while the troops and crew were entering the boats. Tile Chateau Renault’s gunners shelled the submarine. The torpeuoers joined iu the fight, hitting the submarine, which sank head foremost. Twenty-two Germans, including the captain, were rescued.
