At the Auckland police court, today (states a Press Association Telegram) David Henry Simons, who admitted that being a bookmaker he made bets in Queen Street, was lined £7O on each of two charges. A Press Association telegram from Auckland to-day states: J. Boyd, Mayor of Onehunga and proprietor of Onehunga Zoo, was charged before Mr Eraser, S.M., that he voted at a meeting of the council on a matter inj which lie bad direct or pecuniary interest, namely, the rescinding of a bylaw which virtually concerned the existance of the Zoo. The Magistrate said that defendant acted in his own interests and insisted on pressing the matter against tin* wishes of the majority of the councillors. Defendant was convicted and fined £3O and costs. Leave to appeal was granted.
