The Messagero states that the Austrian attack began in brilliant moonlight at three o'clock in the morning on a five-kilometre front between San Marco and Santa Caterana. The defenders evacuated the front trenches but in half an hour delivered massed counter-attacks with the bayonet. The majority of ' the Au'str'ians in the trenches were -killed,, furious hand-to-hand fighting lasting till dawn. The Austrians employed picked troops. The Italian losses were comparatively light. '
