AUCKLAND MEETING. - (Notes by Cicero.) Racegoers throughout'the Dominion will turn their thoughts on the Great Northern meeting, which opens at Ellerslie to-morrow. As in former yefcrs, the class 6f horses engaged is good, and the fields show promise of being more numerous than ever.

The meeting will open with the Maiden Steeplechase for which event fourteen accepted. Hurakia, Waimai, and Bonny Jean appear a likely trio. A very large number (thirty accepted) will probably start for the Jervois Handicap, and in such a crowd a great deal depends on the draw for position. However, Pendoon, Aurore and Brown Loch have fighting chances.

The Maiden Hurdles, taken on the whole are a very poor lot. Maryland showed promise at Wanganui, and may keep the best of the Northerners busy. Lady Sabretache and Brookfield, look the most dangerous. The- Great* Northern Hurdles of £1250, two and half miles, has drawn eighteen acceptors. Naupatu (11.0) head* the handicap, and on paper appears to have little chance of defying El Gallo to whom he is conceding one pound. On performances the latter is undoubtedly the pick of the handicap. Many good judges considered the Aucklander got off at least ten pounds too light. Harbour Lightis a real good horse when at his best. He was badly defeated on Monday morning, in a gallop over the fences with Gladful and Pursefiller, but on the following morning showed up really well in a gallop. If stripped at his best, this gelding will take settling. Tararua Jack is" a fair hurdler, but may not be class enough at the weights for several of his opponents to-morrow. Marton was a first flightier a couple of seasons back. He has ifailed to reproduce that form so far, but ran a couple of fair races at Wan'gariui. Te Onga, who won the same race two years ago, has recently I shown good form, and many look to Ihim to play a part this I year. Hurakia should do better in •the Steeplechase on Monday. Spal- ' per ion would be better suited over a •shorter journey. Tenacious is the re- ' presentative of a dangerous stable. . Styrax ran two first-class races at ' Wanganui, and many good judges prefer his chances to that of the other Egmont trained one (Harbour Light). Of the lighter weights Gladful and | Pursefiller have many admirers. The last-named put up rather a sensational performance at Wanganui in 'being left two chains, and then winining pulling up. However the com'pany, she will meet in the event will be much more formidable. Possibly, El Gallo, Pursefiller, and Harbour Light may have most say in the set* tlement of the 1916 Great Northern. The Cornwall Handicap of £650 is remarkably weak, both in class and number. Battle Eve, Fisher and Castalia may be the public's elect. ! The majority of the acceptors for ! the Hunt Club Hurdles are unknown. ' Ambassador who is well forward in condition should be favorite. 1 No loss than twenty-three horses figure in the five furlong scramble. Marimba, Hyginas. and Bluestone are good beginners, a necessary qualification for a race of this description. THE OTAKI MEETINC. The Otaki Winter meeting also opens to-morrow, when the following horses may have a following: Maiden, Revocation and Merry Andrew; Flying Hack, Antwerp and Limpet, Steeplechase, Paremata and Parewanui; Cup, Orleans and Lady Louisa; Otaki Hack, Cello and Silenus; Rahui Depredation an " Tirana-Welter Hack, Kukri and Cherry Blossom,
