The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1916. ADVANCE TARANAKI.

To the whole of Taranaki it is of interest and importance when any one of its towns takes some really progressive step. Especially is this so when the Port and principal town advances. Of late New Plymouth has realised tinneed of many permanent improvements, the latest, but by no means least important, being the installation of a very excellent electrical tramway service, which yesterday was formally opened with an enthusiasm that overcame even the coldest day experienced this winter. Mr C. H. Burgess, Mayor of New Plymouth, Mr J. E. Wilson (exMayor), and other leading men from New Plymouth spoke with confidence as to the financial outlook for the service and the good future that is ahead of their town, while visitors from other parts of the Province (including, especially Mr J. W. Boon, Mayor of Stratford, and Mr Beckbessinger, Mayor of Waitara), expressed warmest good wishes for the fulfilment of New Plymouth's best anticipations. Naturally the new tramway service has cost a great deal of money, and war conditions have added to the anticipated outlay. For possibly a couple or three years the venture is hardly likely to show an actual profit, but the men who initiated and have carried through the scheme are confident that the advantages the town will gain by the service" will quite outweigh any temporal J loss. There are many aspects to lie considered in the making of a town, and one lias usually to pay in soma form for the privileges, comforts ami conveniences of hie- New Plymouth is certainly a more'desirable town now that it has an up-to-date tramway service, and we do not think the step now taken is likely to lie regretted.
