'l'lio secret,ary of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote ! stating that hi view of the epidemic |of infantile paralysis raging m the different parts of the Dominion, the Board urges the Council to at once 'carry out the recommendation of the Health Department re sanitary inspection of dwellings and business pm raises,—Received. 1 W. W. Hodge wrote: I would esteem it a favour if you would he good enough to furnish mo with the correct qualifications of Mr 1. Sullivan, a... <-n Engineer. As this information is urgently needed, ! would be pleased to receive your reply at an early date. (T Thompson moved that the letter lay on the table. Seconded by CT Lawson, and carried. | yy W. Hodge wrote: Ldeaso take notice that any earth or material you place on my section, No. i tS, Stiatford, will be placed there at your own risk. —Received. j The secretary of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company Limited wrote replying to the Council’s letter re j valuation of the Company’s undertaking. The Council had the director’s approval of the resolution as submitted in the Council’s letter.-The Borough Solicitor was instructed to prepare the necessary documents: i A. F. Molli son. New Plymouth, 'wrote stating that they had definitely decided to take over the lease of the shopj—72 x IS—double .front, in the new Municipal Buildings, at the rental of £3 10s per week and rates. —The .lease was granted.

j Thos. White wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the unsatisfactory position of the light at the corner of the Mountain Road and i Warwick Road west. Continuing, the wi iter said: When ( a person turns in from the Mountain'Road He’lf nets the road utterly unliglited, or when coining towards the main road he is unable ito see the light until nearly up to the post. I would respectfully suggest that either the transformer he removed from the side of the post to the back, 'or that the lamp bracket be'longthon,cd sufficiently to carry the light beyond the transformer, in either case, the cost would not bo great, rnd the light is much needed, as that particular bit of road is anything but good.— jThe matter was loft in the hands of the Lighting Committee with power to act. ( Letters were received from the National and Phoenix Insurance Company’s with regard to the risks on the j Council buildings.—Received. ABATTOIR MANAGER’S REPORT. I The Abattoir Manager (Mr A. M. Spillman) reported on the working of the Abattoir during the month of March, 1916. The following s|ock wore slaughtered ; —Cows 65, heifers 50, calves 6, sheep 263, lambs 59, pigs 14, tripes prepared 28. Slaughtering fees £57 17s 3d. Stock condemned—Cows, 1 wholly, 5 partially; heifers, 1 wholly, G partially, j The stock slaughtered during the year ending 31st March, 1916, were: Cows 740, heifers. 424, oxen 67, calves 42, sheep 3072, lambs 581, pigs 465, tripes 522, sundries 6. I would be very pleased indeed if the work of erecting the fence on the south side of the main race can bo gone on with, as only a few days ago a number of cows broke through into the turnips.—Adopted. The matter of attending to the work of erecting the fence *n the south side of the race was left in the hands of the Abattoir Committee with power •to act. i ENGINEER’S REPORT. ; The Engineer (Mr T. D. Sullivanl

reported on the progress of works for the past month as follows: — The tar and sanding of Broadway paths has been completed. Culverts have been inserted in the following places;—Cordelia Street at junction of Regan street, Broadway 'near Mr W. W. Hodge’s property. Regan street near Mr S. H, James property, Miranda street junction of Page street, Miranda street, j Culverts have been repaired in the following p 1 aces :—Hamlet street junction of Olivia street. Broadway junction of Romeo street, Juliet street I junction of Renton street, Romeo street junction of Juliet street, Fenton street junction of Orlando street, Juliet greet leading to the Town Hall. A concrete crossing has been put in for Mr S. H. James opposite his warehouse, Regan street. Loose stones have been raked off Regan street between Broadway and Miranda. street. A protection wall has been built in Page street to prevent loose earth coming in contact with Mr Hodge’s building. A low spot on Broadway at its junction with Seyton street has been filled in. A new track has heen formed at the ford. Watertablos have been cleaned out on Broadway South, Juliet and Fenton streets. Broadway Central has had special attention during the past month, disinfectants being used during the very hot weather. All fire plugs have been inspected and are in good condition. The formation pf Juliet street footpaths is in hand! 'Concrete pipes of various sizes ary required for replacing old wooden culverts. WORKS COMMITTEE. Taking into consideration the fact that the Estimates for the current year necessitate a Complete survey of ■the Council’s requirements for the current year, and will have to be brought down for the next meeting. The Committee have not brought down any recommendations for consideration at this meeting.—Adopted.

TENDERS. J. Martin’s tender for the erection of a shelter shod at the Kopuatama Cemetery .was accepted. - | .... . ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £99 8s 4d were passed for payment.
