A London cable says that a Baronetcy has been conferred on Mr Henry Chaplin.

Mr James Davidson, who is leaving Manaia to take np farming at Toko, was on Saturday last presented by his fellow employees of the Waimate County Council with a handsome clock.

The. Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) visited Eltham on Saturday and presented the colors to the Boy Scouts. On Sunday he held a confir-, mation service.

Private advice has been received in Hawera of the death, at the ago of. 76 year's, of Mr William McFarland, who for many years was farming at Hawera, and lately resided at Devonport, Auckland.

His Excellency the Governor has receiVcd a telegram informing him that his brother. Captain the Hon. Jocelyn Folja’lnbe, of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, was killed in action on April 6th.

The death is announced of Mrs S. G. Larcom, of Turuturu road, Hawera. Her property is one, of the few properties (remarks the local Star) .that ■never changed hands, quite an unusual thing tii Taranaki history.

A London cable says that Mr C. Wray Palliser, C.M.G., has resigned the New Zealand secretaryship. He has been on sick leave in Cornwall for some months, and his doctors have advised him not to return to London.

The Rev. Hedley White, who concluded his ministry at the Eltham Methodist Church last Sunday, was presented by theiLadies’ Guild of the Church and members of the Sunday School with a small token in appreciation ,of his services.

Mr Raynor White, of St. John’s Methodist Church, Auckland, has been appointed organist and cho'nnaster of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, in succession to Mr Wilfred Coulson. Mr White’s present choir is considered one of the best in New Zealand.

Mr W. P. Kirkwood has received a letter from his brother, Major Kirkwood, stating that the latter has been recommended for the Military Cross in connection with the part he had taken as second in command of the 10th Gloucester’s at the Battle of

Loos, when the 10th Gloucester-? and Bth Berks led the attack. Major Kirkwood iil now fully recovered from his wounds. (

Major James O’Sullivan, who has been Director of Defence Stores in Wellington, has been appointed Inspector of Ordinance Stores throughout the Dominion. Major" O’Sullivan has been in the Defence. Office for over thirty-seven years. He joined the old Armed Constabulary, and was transferred to the Defence Stores Department in 1885.

A very old resident of Auckland. Mrs F. L. Prime, died last week, aged 91 years. Mr and Mrs Prime arrived in Auckland in the ship Cresswell, commanded by Captain Barnett, on June 25, 1855, and had resided there practically ever since. He and Mrs Prime celebrated the diamond jubilee of their Mr Prime survives his wife. He was Mayor of Auckland from December, 1874, to 1875.
