The executive of the Stratford A.| and P. Association will meet this evening at 7.30, and a general committee meeting is fixed for 2 o’clock to-mor- 1 row afternoon. j At the Auckland Police Court (reports the Press Association) one bookseller was fined £lO and costs, and three others each £3 and costs, for selling indecent literature in a book called “Winning Post Stories.” At the Stratford S.M. Court to-day, Mr Kenrick, S.M., gave judgment in the case Anderson v. Abbott, being a| claim for £SO, loss of crop of potatoes on defendant’s property at Whanga-| momoua. Plaintiff was allowed £39 on the claim, solicitor’s fees £2 12s, Court costs £1 17s, witnesses’ expenses £9 3s, total £52 12s. Mr P. Thomson appeared for plaintiff and Mr E. S. Rutherfnrd for defendant. i’J f* •*■/' ; ... ! The enemy’s 42-cm. (16 V inch) howitzers throw a tremendous projec- 1 tile. One of these fell in soft ground near one of the outer forts at Verdun, and as it did not explode, it was dug up, the charge was - extracted, and measurements were made. The projectile was discharged from a firingpoint, distant 7V miles from the Verdun fort, is IV metres (practically sft.) from tip to base, and weighed, charged, 956 kilogrammes, or 2107.61 b., i.e., only 133111. short of a ton. ft 1 was reported a week or two ago that a 12-cm. gun had bombarded Dunkirk from a distance of 24 miles. ' Mi 1 T. Mercer announces that he reopens his hairdressing and fancy goods business to-morrow (Saturday) morning in premises formerly occupied by W. Clayton, Broadway, next to Mullen and Marshall’s, when he will display many fire bargains for the benefit of bargain-hunters.
