As bearing upon the meat supplies of the world generally, a report from, the United States is significant. This stated that for the first time in 16 years the meat-packers of the Chicago stockyards were working day and night in the canned meat and hide departments to fill orders. The unusuhl activity has been caused by the large orders received as a result of the European war. In the canning departments of the big packers alone 3000 ext,ra men had been put to work within a week to, operate the plants at their fullest capacity. The visible domestic supply of canning beef was depleted several weeks previously, and the packers began sending to foreign fields for cattle suitable for this purpose. As. a result, Canada, Mexico, and the southern States, which never before shipped live, stock'to the Chicago market, had been sending their cattle and receiving a good price. The packers announced that 'their entire stock pt hides had been contracted for, and that orders had been received .which 'would exhaust the normal supply for November and December. Until recently the normal trade in hides in Chicago averaged' from 40,000 to 75,000 hides a week. This had sprung to Over 150,000.
