NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Per Press ’Association. Dunedin, December 30. The tennis championships began on the Carisbrook courts to-day in superb weather. Ladies’ Singles.—Miss Hughes (Wellington), beat Miss Jackson (Otago), 6—l, 6—3. Miss Brewster (Taranaki), beat Miss Black (Otago), 6—l, 6—3. Combined Doubles.—Miss-Baird and W. GoSs beat Miss Cramohd and R. Brown, 6r-8, B—6, 6—4.
States the Otago Daily Times:— Mr Arthur Pe'therick, secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, arrived from Weilingtomon Wednesday fbr the purpose of assuming control and managing the tennis championship events, which were ebinme/Ki -i this morning iWodno-id iy) at Caridnook
The Otago Association Las had the preliminary arrangements jaa to preparation of courts in hand for some time, and Mr Petherick is well pleased with the results. The courts will be fast for play, and, given fine weather, some
good matches by leading tennis players of the Dominion will be seen. The pre- ' sent New Zealand champions are all competingA. G. Wallace (Taranaki), Men’s Singles; A. G. Wallace and C. J. Dickie (Taranaki), Men’s Doubles; Miss Annie Gray (Auckland), Ladies’ Singles; Miss Annie. Gray (Auckland), and Miss Eva Baird (Hawke’s Bay), Ladies’ Doubles; G. Olliver (Canterbury),, in the absence of Miss M. Steele (Auckland), has Miss R Hughes (Wellington) as his partner in the Combined Doubles.
