•' .<m" — 7 EXECUTIVE MEETS JANUARY «. , Pee Press' 'Association. Dunedin, December 24. The Hon. J. Allen, interivewed, said the Hon. Mr Rhodes had arranged for cheap Xmas greetings being cabled from New Zealand to the troops : f in Egypt. As to the finances, so far a« the •Customs revenue was. concerned, it had kept up better than anticipated. l,t was expected- there would be a material drop in consequence of the war, but such had noh the case. The railway revenue had improved. That was all he could say about finance till ' the December returns' came .-in.

As to the war loan, his. opinion "was that the proper thing would be to keep it in a separate account, and as soon as Parliament met make provision for interest and sinking fund to provide for that loan covering a reasonable number of years., We had already borrowed two million, and the interest ■ on this is now. being found out of the Consolidated Fund, and that charge would, of course, diminish the surplus at the end of the year. Mr Allen spends the holidays in Otago. He had promised to return to Wellington on January IQ, but he had now been notified that the, Executive was being called for the 4th.
