In the Sheffield Shield match, South Australia’s first innings realised 151 (Pellew 30, Cooper 25). New South Wales, in their second innings, lost five wickets for 211 (Cranney 45, Davis 32, Taylor 35, Minnett 27, Bardsley 42). SPORT WITH THE AXE. W. Peck, a champion axeman, in the 18-inch underhand chop, and the champion single-handed sawyer of Australia, who will compete at the Axe--1 men’s Carnival at Eltham on Boxing Day and the following Monday, is one of the finest speciens of manhood ever seen in an athletic ring in the Dominion. Standing 6ft 4in in height, and turning the scale at 18 stone, he is magnificently proportioned, and wields his axe with consummate skill. New Zealand has, however, produced men who, though not of such gigantic stature, make formidable opponents for Pech, as was evic[enced on Saturday, when Shewry gave the big man no chance, and he will have to chop his utmost to secure the verdict at the Carnival. Several champions will compete, but the herculean form of Dave Pretty will not be seen in the ring. This popular axeman, who seemed to be at the fop (if his form lan year, had to be operated on at Wanganui a week later for appendicitis, and he made a premature re-entry into the ring, but the operation had affected his general health.
