Madam Bernard was a passenger by the mail train this morning for Wellington on a business trip.

Mr Frank Iredale, ex-International player, has been chosen as secretary of the Cricket Association, states a Sydney cablegram.

Mr Mahon, of West Australia, who was honorary minister in Ujio Commonwealth Ministry, las been appointed Minister of External Affairs, vice Mr Arthur, deceased.

The Stratford Borough Council, at its meeting last evening, paid the following compliment to Mr C. S. Kelly, of the reporting staff of the “Stratford Evening Post,” on the eve of his departure for the training camp at Trentham : “That this Council conveys to Mr Kelly its good wishes as a soldier of the King and hopes for his safe return to Stratford.”

Captain J. G. T. Harper has been appointed to command H.M.S. Dreadnought. Captain Harper is a New Zealander, having been born in Christchurch, and educated at Christ’s College until he went Home. He was for three years Navigating Commander of the Royal yacht, and Master of the Fleets in the great review of last July.

Dean Lightheart, Roman Catholic priest at Rotorua, met with a serious accident yesterday on the Waiotapu road, six miles from Rotorua. The Press Association states that he was driving in a motor car alone, when it ran over a bank, rolling over on him and crushing him badly. He was found unconscious soon afterwards. Mr and Mrs A. E. Gorton were last night, at a meeting of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, held in the Foresters’ Hall, made a presentation of a silver teapot, suitably engraved, by the members of the Lodge, on the occasion of their recent marriage. Both Mr and Mrs Gorton are members of the Order. P.G. Bro. C. D. Sole made the pre-

sentation ill a few well-chosen words, and Mr Gorton, on behalf of Mrs Gorton and self, suitably replied.
