DESTRUCTION NEAR TIMARU.

Timaru, December 7
Stratliallan homestead, near Fairlie, was destroyed by fire this morning The tire was started by sparks Iron, the burning of trees uprooted by tin recent gale. Some furniture was saved. A shearing shed belonging to M Roach, at Orari, was burned early this morning, with shearing machines, ei; gine, 200 sheep, and five bales o wool. A tierce gale was blowing. Tin fire was probably caused by a spark from the engine boiler. A WANGANUI SURPRISE. Wanganui, December 7. A meeting of the Moderate League y had an unexpected ending this even ing. After a number of gentlemen had spoken against prohibition am the necessity for the Moderate League’s existence in order to hrifig about needed reforms, a member of the audience moved that this meeting pledge itself in the interests of New Zealand to do everything possible to carry No-License and National Prohibition at the forthcoming poll. The motion Was carried by about fifty to fifteen. FOUND DEAD. Invercargill, December 7. The Inspector of Police received ad vice to-night from Pembroke that Rob ert Miller, an old-age pensioner, was found dead near his residence on Saturday. KILLED UNDER A DRAY. Timaru, December 7. William Scott, aged 30, a son of i Lyalldale farmer, lost his life .on Friday night as the result of a dray capsizing on him. The horse was filso killed. He was not missed till the next evening. A DOCTORS MISHAP. Timaru, December 7. Dr. Unwin, of Timaru, when rambling by himself at Mount Cook, fell and broke a leg. He was found by a search party. SERIOUS BUSH FIRE. Dunedin, December 7. What is said to be the most serious bush fire known in the district broke out at Whare Flat this, morning, and continued to rage all day. At one time the local school was m danger, and some difficulty was experienced in getting the children away. Residents of the neighbourhood, assisted by the corporation men, saved the teacher’.s residence, but a fiveroomed residence, owned by Mrs Glendining, of Roslyn, and used as a weekend residence, was destroyed. The bouse was insured in the National iffice for £IOO, and the furniture in the same office for a similar amount. Mrs Glendining estimates her loss at ibout £4OO. Late to-night, the fire was travelling in the direction of Waiaki.
