THE BAYLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.
THE ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS.
The athletic competitions in connection with the Bayly Memorial Scholarship eventuated on the NewPlymouth High School ground on Saturday.
For 'this year's scholarship ten boys entered, viz., I). Doile, A. MoHardy G, Graham. M. Atkinson, D. Candy' A. Callander, R. Phipps, and E. Tansey (New Plymouth High School), M. Copestake (Stratford D.H.S.), and 1). Clements (Eltham D.H.S.). The two latter boys arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train on Friday evening, and were the guests of Mr. W. H. Moyes at the High School. The. sports ground was in line order, despite the recent rain, and as Mr MoyeS had made complete arrangements re marking the ground, etc., the events were quickly decided. Tile officials were: Messrs James MeLeod (chairman) and James Garcia, representing the Taranaki Rugby Union; W. H. Moves. A. R. Ryder, S. Paul, J. Bennett. E.! Whittle, and A. K. Sykos. Some gockl performances were put up b\ the boys, who showed improvement on last year, and only one failed to gain the 80 points needed to qualify. Copestake, of Stratford, with five firsts to his credit, secured first place with 2-15 points. The other qualifying points were:—Graham 200, Callander 120, McHardy 110, Tansey 105, Candy 95, Atkinson 85, Phipp* SO, Clements 80.
The detailed results were as follow: 100 Yards (standard, lSsec).—Cope stake (Stratford D.H.S.), 40 points, 1; McHardy (New Plymouth High School), 30 points, 2; Graham (N.P. H.S.), 25 points, 3. Won easily by several yards. All who started gained the standard.
•MO Yards (standard, 66seo).—Copestake, 45 points, 1; Graham, 4S points, 2; McHardy, 5 points, 3. Copestake won easily. High Jump (standard, 4ft.).— Copestake, 4ft. sj}in, 40 points, 1; Mc-' Hardy, 30 points, 2; Graham, 25 points, 3. The winner jumped well. McHardy, Graham, Clements and Tan. sey tied for second place. They all qualified for the standard, as did also L'-ylaj Candy, and Callander. Long Jump (standard, 13ft.). — Copestake, 16ft Graham, loft sin, 30 points, 2; Callander, 14ft lliin, .25 points, 3. Doile McHardy, Atkinson, Phipps, Tansey, and Clements also gained the standard.
Drop Kick (standard, 40 yards).--each) (standard, one goal at each of two angles).—Copestake, 5 goals, 50 points, 1; Candy, 4 goals, 35 points, 2; Atkinson, 4 goals, 25 points, 3 Candy and Atkinson tied for second place, the former winning in the kickoff. McHardy, Callander, Phipps, and Tansey gained tho standard. Drop Kick ,standard, 40 yards).— Graham, 50 points, 1; Callander, 15 points, 2; McHardy, ~ 3. Graham was the only one to get the standard.
Punt (standard, 33 yards).—Craham 40 points, 1; Copestake, .10 point? 2; Tansey, 25 points, 3. Atkinson. Candy, Callander, Phipps, and Clements also gained the standard. The final results will not he known until January, as the results of the scholastic examinations have to bo added. Previous winners of the scholarship were:—l9lo, Bacon (N.P.H.S.); 1911.
