THE TOWN HALL DISPUTE.
[To The Editor Stkatfobd Post.] Sir } Mr Will Diamond's letter re Town Hall and the Theatre, published in your last issue, is misleading. Madame Bernard never at any time offered to close down the Picture Show and let me have the Theatre on polling eve. After Madame and Mr W. Diamond had booked the Town Hall to me for the 9th, and gave me a legal receipt for the rent, my opponents got to work. All that ever passed between Mr Diamond and myself about the Theatre was his query to me one day, at least a fortnight ago, viz. : "Why not take the Theatre for the 9th?" I replied: "1 don't want it, as I have the Town Hall." I am, etc. W. H. HAWKINS. (A portion of Mr Hawkins' letter is here excised as libellous. Mr Hawkins concludes by stating he will give an address in the open-air on Wednesday night, at which there will he some "plain speaking."
