The death of Mrs Marcus Clarke, widow of the novelist, is announced from Melbourne. Mr Jack, science master at the Dookie College, has been selected to accompany the Shackleton Expedition states a Sydney cablegram. A Press Association telegram from Hokitika announces the death of Mr William Mitchell, a well-known pioneer, of Stafford, aged seventy-one. He leaves a grown-up family of ten.
Mr It. J. Pattern, who succeeds to the postmastership of Whangamomona in a few days, has been stationed at I Kaikoura, South Marlborough, for 9£ years, as first assistant in that office. During that period of time he has frequently acted as postmaster (such for several months, consecutively) owing to the illness of the late oiiicer-in-charge. Mr Patton has proved the most efficient and popular "second in command" tlie post office has ever bad. Evidence of the esteem in which lie is held there was made manifest last week when he was presented with various tokens of personal appreciation and of services rendered, at a large assemglage of Oddfellows and citizens. Subsequently he and his wife were entertained by members ot the Presbyterian Church at a social, when further ' presentations were made. Mr Patton has been an officebearer of the church for some years. He is a P.G. of the Heart of Oak Lodge. r.0.0.F., M.F., and has tilled the office of permanent secretary for over six years.
