INSPECTION OF MACHINERY. Per Press Association. Palmerston, November 27. A deputation of managers of dairy factories in Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Northern Wairarapa and Rangitikei , waited on the Hon. Mr Fisher this , morning in connection with the clause
in the Inspection of Machinery Act
requiring all drivers of engines to be in effective charge. Mr C. R. ueattie, the spokesman, pointed out that enforcement would meaii that appointment of a certificated engine driver, and would mean an extra cost of £3 os per week in all factories. The Minister said that when the clause was framed it was never thought that dairy companies would be effected, but it was necessary in sawmills and flaxmills. When he got back to "Wellington he would set the Department working to see if it could not distinguish between .machinery dangerous to human life and harmless machinery. He would do his best to meet the complaint.
PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY. Dunedin, November 26. The Presbyterian General Assembly concluded its sitting early this evening. A report on Synod practise was remitted to next General Assembly, and it was resolved that wherever practical the first Sunday in May be observed as Bible Society Sunday. The report of the finance committee showed that the estimated expenditure for the year was £2250. To meet this the committee recommended an assessment on funds at the rate of five per cent. - , The Otago Bible Society’s report, which was adopted, set forth that during its existence it had raised £lo,000 and spent over £I6OO for colportage in Otago, sent a free contribution of £640 to the British and Foreign Bible Society, and £4877 to the Nation Bible' Society, Scotland. The Otago A. and P. show was concluded to. day. There was a large attendance, but owing to heavy rain many people left the ground between 3 and 4 o’clock. ' The takings for the two days were £4IOO. A. AND P. SHOWS. Auckland, November 26. The Auckland A. and P. Association opened its annual summer show to-day in threatening weather. In spite of the drought, and the departure of so many district farmers for the front, entries are quite up to the average, and the quality of stock coming forward is winning praise from experts.
