Peu Press Association. Wellington, November 25. ■ At the Supreme Court, James Vipond M-illican, who was convicted of false pretences and issuing valueless cheques, came up for sentence. The Chief Justice said he would adjourn the case till May if the prisoner restored the money (£l6), and if he I lived decently he would probably hear; no more of the matter. John Ford was sent to gaol for six months for forgery. Thomas Robinson, aged 19 years, was admitted to probation for twelve months, a'nd ordered to pay £7 2s 8d by instalments. Robert Phair, for breaking, entering, theft, and receiving stolen property at Hastings, was sent to Rotoroa for nine months. William Christopher Dickson was sentenced to four months' -imprisonment for breaking, entering, and theft at Ohakune. Auckland, November 25. At the Supreme Court to-day Ernest Henry Mackay was charged with] attempting to murder his father-in-law. The trouble was said to be due to family differences. The jury found the accused guilty of intimidation, but not of intent to kill. Sentence was deferred. William Albert Willand was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment on a charge of having caused a certain noxious thing to be taken with intent to procure miscarriage. ALLEGED WRONGFUL ARREST. Auckland, November 26. The Supreme Court was occupied yesterday and to-day with an a«tion claiming £2OO general damages and £3lO special damages for alleged wrongful arrest, having been brought by Alfred Cuthbert Story, medical practitioner, formerly of Raratonga, against William Henry Grove, Island trader, Auckland. The allegation forming the basis of the claim is that defendant maliciously and without reasonable excuse had plaintiff J arrested in Wellington on the ground the Dr. Story was about to evade payment of £2B, which defendant alleged was owing by the doctor for a bucsrv imported from America to Raratonga. Plaintiff's case was that bo refused to take delivery of the buggy because it was not delivered within the time agreed upon. The case is proceeding.
