EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs ,s.,,Trimly (chairman}, G, A. Adlam, R. Masters, A. M. Bradbury, J. Mackay, A. Q. Halcombe, E. Marfell, A. Morton.

Leave of absence was gi anted no Mr J. Young. The Chairman reported that Mrs Mills had* been temporarily appointed head teacher at Pohokura.

Mr Masters reported that the price charged for cleaning the septic tank at the Stratford Technical School was reasonable, and he recommended payment of same (£4). The report was. adopted. Mr Masters further reported that he had arranged with Mr H. Collins to take over the headmur.er's residence at Stratford at £35, which was £lO above his tender. The report was adopted. The Chief Inspector, Mr Ballau. tyne, reported:—l have gone tarefully through the list of applicants for the position of first assistant in the secondary department of the District High School, Stratfor*.'. I recommend that Mr Bowler, who is at present on the staff of the secondary department, be promoted to the position. The report was adopted.

The secretary of the Stratford A. and P. Association \vrote asking the Board to close the schools in the Stratford and Whangamomona counties on the "people's day" of the Stratford Show. The matter waa referred to the various school committees concerned.

The overseer (Mr C. H. Moore'; reported as follows: Tariki.—The painting of the outside of both school and residence, and kitchen inside, have been completed; also sundry repairs attended to. As the present* tank at the school is woun out, I have sent one out to replace it. This will be fixed in shortly. I have held > over the re-building of new out-offices until the holidays, as the present places are both concreted, and it will be necessary to re-build on the same sito. The committee wish to have a turn-stile or swing-gate at the front entrance, and are willing to pay for the labor. I should recom-. mend that this be attended to when the other proposed work is being done.

Stratford.—l have inspected the septic tank at the Technical School; I would recommend that the committee he asked to renew the filter heds with screen shingle 'nste*;d of coke, the Board paying for the material. In regard to the tank itself, I wish to make further investigations in regard to the drainage from the science room. Huiroa.—New out offices have hoen erected at this school; sundry repairs were also attended to. I also noted painting requirements both at school and residence. Applications from Pembroke for a tank, and from Stratford for replacing the asphalt floor in the infant school with a wooden floor were referred to the i overseer.—Abridged from "News."
