TARANAKI-WANCANUI SYNOD.

The Taranaki-Wanganui district's annual Synod of the Methodist Church commenced at New Plymouth yesterday, there being about fifty members present, under the presidency of the Rev. T. G. Hammond. The meeting extends over three days, and includes committee work besides that of the Synod sessions and the Social Service Union.

The members met at 10 a.m. yesterday in the Whiteley Church, the opening proceedings being of a devotional character, followed by a most appropriate address by the Rev. A. Header (Stratford), after which the Sacrament was administed by' the Revs. W. Cannell Vtud T. G. Hammond. The resumed again in committee at 2 p.m., the acting-chairman, the Rev. T. G. Hammond presiding. A cordial welcome was- extended t« the chairman by the Revs. W. Canned and A. B. Chapped, M.A.. and heartily endersed by all present. The chairman, in reply, expressed his deep appreciation of the kindly welcome accorded to him. He also extended a welcome to the Revs. W. Howe, A. 0. Harris, C. A. Olds, 8.A., and Messrs C. Aker and J. R. Nelson,

It was decided that trie best wishes if the committee lie conveyed to t'ae chairman of the district (Rev. H. L. Blamires), who is absent with the Expeditionary Force as chaplain.

HOME MISSIONARIES. After hearing the report of the trial sermon of the Rev. W. Rowe, and of his circuit work; also an oral examination in theology, he was unanimously recommended to the ensuing conference for ordination, subject to his written examination being satisfactory. The Rev. A. A. Beusley was also recommended to pass in his year, subject to his written examination being satisfactory. Very favorable reports were received of his trial' sermon and cirit .vork. In the case of Pakena Riripi, it was .ecommended that he be admitted *r. probation, and be credited witli one year of probation. The report of the principal of the Theological Institution was received, ind gratification expressed at the nature of its contents. A vote of appreciation was passed ,o the Rev. A. Reader for the address )f the morning. ' The committee adjourned at 5.30 till ) o'clock this morning, in order to complete its work prior to the meeting of the Synod in representative session it 10 a.m.

WELCOME CONVERSAZIONE

The members of the Synod were entertained last evening at the Whiteley Hall, which was well filled, a large number of the local Methodist Church being present, including many ladies. 'Uev. T. H. Roseveare, on behalf of the Taranaki Ministers' Association, and Mr C. Carter (circuit steward) cordially welcomed the members of Synod to New Plymouth, the Rev. T. J. Hammond; Messrs E. Dixon and T. P. Hughson acknowledging the courtesy. —"News."
