It was a very tired held that capitulated to the outsider, who fought out a great finish with Sir Alwyntou, Ihe winner was lying very handy at the bridge, and spurted through to head the held when the turn was reached. The general opinion was that he headed the held too early, and would fail at tthe last, but by a magnificent effort he not only maintained the lead, but won with a. little to spare. [Bv Cxoe.ro. ] Messrs ifctuss Bros, of N.S.W., secured a great bargain at .1- B. Reid’s dispersal sale on January 29thj 1912. Oourrmno (Gipsy Grand-Coronal) with foal at foot by Charlemagne 11, and .etintled to Downshire, fell to their bid at 175 guineas. The foal in question is now known by the name of Carlita, who bent a field of first-class three-year-olds in the V.R C. Derby of 3000 60fs. Bertrada, who has carried the
Highden’s colors with some success, is a full sister to the lilly uuder re- ■ view. j Hi Gama (Varco- Teacup) who v\on j live Hotiiam Handicap at the \ K C. I meeting on Saturday, cost .Mr W. i Thillips (who originally raced him) | 10 guineas as a yearling. After wiu- ■ uing a couple of unimporfti.it hack races, \ asco’s son was secured by his
present owner for 500 guineas. The action of the Auckland District Committee in extending the conditional license issued by them to B. Heeley, after that jockey had failed to appear when ordered to do so by that body, is commented upon freely, i'ersoually the writer contends, that under the rules of racing, the Auckland committee or any other, have no power to grant a “conditional” license. When a jockey is granted a license, such license holds good until the 31st July oi that season. I am quite prepared to admit that a jockey may be suspended, or his license cancelled, but under Conference rules a “conditional license does not appear to exist. But probably Heeley has been well advised by some legal light in the course he
is pursuing. Shining Star, who has been off the scene for a considerable time, was taken to New Plymouth by Bob Barlow on Monday, and will be given another trial. The odds are that the horse may not stand preparation. Patronaic can be hardly expected to run at his best at Auckland to-day, as the speedy roan is a bit above himself. He should, however, be benefitled by the first day’s racing. Moonbria (Merriwee-La Notte) who is owned by the N.Z. sportsman, Mr E. J. Watt, was bred in the Hawke’s Bay district, and is a half-brother to the great NocLuiform. His performance yesterday in running third to Kingsborough in the Melbourne Cup, which the son of Wallace annexed in the splendid record time of 3miu 26sccs., must be considered really good, •and ho was unlucky to meet such a fast one on the day.
