GERMAN SUBMARINES NEAR
THE ORKNEYS.

A British steamer reports that her captain observed four German submarines off the Orkney Islands.
Orkneys.—The Orkney Islands foi m a county of Scotland, comprising OS islands in the North Sea, 2!) being inhabited. The total area is 660 square miles and the population 25,896. The largest island is Pomona, on which is situated‘the capital Kirkwall. THE GERMAN COAL SUPPLIES.
London. October 25
A British ship captain from Mexico reports that, when at Vera Cruz, he noticed six colliers, flying the Norwegian flag, laden to the bulwarks with coal. No one could say whither they were bound. Presently a wireless arrived, giving latitude and longitude. Instantly the six put to sea, making for the point indicated, where , German cruisers were waiting to replenish their hunkers.
RECEPTION TO THE BADGER AT SHEERNESS. (Received 9.20 a.m.) London, October 26. The Badger, which rammed the Gorman submarine, has arrived at Sheerness. She got an enthusiastic reception. THE ALLEGED SALE OF THE COEBEN AND BRESLAU. (Received 11.25 a.m.) Rome, October 26. The Tribune states that the Goehen’s and the Brelau’s hasty- return to the Bosphorus was duo to the Russian and British Ambassadors informing the Porte that they did not'regard the sale of vessels as valid, and that the Allies would attack them the next time they came out. TO CAPTURE GERMAN CARRYING TRADE. London, October 26 The Times’ New York correspondent says that it is reported that an alliance lias been formed of Liverpool and New' York ship-owners to capture Germany’s carrying trade. A fleet of at least twenty ships, flying the American flag, will operate from New York to Australia, India, China, and South America./ CAPITAL FOR TWENTY BIG CARGO STEAMERS. (Received 9.20 a.m.) New York, October 26. The alliance of Now York and Liverpool shipowners subscribed capita.; for a fleet of at least.twenty big cargo steamers flying the American flag in order to capture Gormany , ’s carrying trade. I'!to Alliance is the outcome of 'N on Derburg’s criticism that Britain intended to seize the South American trade without giving America a chance of participating.
