CHINESE UNDER MISAPPREHENSION,
(Received 9.20 a.m.) , Tokio, October 25. Official. —Japanese, naval heavy artillery is co-operating with the forces iii the bombardment of Tsing-tao. The Japanese Minister has again assured the Chinese Government that Japan has no intention of acquiring the Tsinan-fu railway, which the Chinese state is a line merely in their financial relations with Germany. Japan regrets that the authorities and the public are still under a misapprehension. i JAPAN’S HIGH MOTIVES. j Britain’s appreciation of Japan’s as sistance created a profound impression, as an offset to the adverse criticism of Japan’s occupation of the Marshall Islands and the Carolines, i Mr Churchill’s telegram shows that Japan’s movements in the South Sea were carried out with Britain’s agreement. Influences antagonistic to the Japanese-American Entente have been endeavouring to create the impression that Japan was acting aggressively on the South Seas, menacing American interests in the Far East, and Britain’s appreciation of Japan’s high motives is welcomed as an indication that there will be closer relations in the future between east and west.
