(Notes by Cicero.) As far as Taranaki sportsmen are concerned the Waverley fixture, which takes place on Monday, is one of the most popular held throughout the year. The open events failed to draw good fields, but the hack events filled very well. Proceedings open with the Brewer Handicap, for which event seven have accepted. Lord Lupin and Astor are both short of work, and will do better later, but Wild Lupin and Heather should be well support jd. Fourteen names appear in the Morton Memorial, and Quo Vadis, who is very well at present, will take a first-class maiden to lower his colors. A good field of thirteen figure in the Hurdles, and Kew, on Wanganui form, will take no end of beating. St. Gate should | also run well. | Th'o great field of twenty-three made the payment for the Wilson Stakes, including such good sprinters as Tyson, The Dodger, Epworth, Wild Daisy and Powder Fox. Tyson has been seriously troubled with his leg, and 1 is said to be a non-starter. Even if I started he will probably not be at his J best. The' Dodger is fast, as his second to Lord Lupin at Egmont, and his win at Feilding prove. He looks Well, and with Epworth may provide a good race. The horses engaged in the Cup, are of poor class. The topweight Ratana (9.0)' was supported by his party at Wanganui, when competing against good horses, and ran a very fair race. . In a field like the. one under notice, it is difficult to pick, one to beat him. Some first-class hacks are engaged in the Flying. King Chira (9.2) will have the service of Sid Reid, and with Denise Orme, should make the event interesting. Eleven accepted for the Moumahaki Stakes. Chaminade and Victoris are well treated. The best of the sprinters engaged in the Wilson Stakes, have also accepted in the Jackson Stakes. The 'Dodger, Epworth, and Gerberga look a likely trio.
TURF TALK. W. Price will do the riding for Murt Gardiner at Waverley. I hear, on good authority, that those concerned have failed to register the partnership of Queen's Poet, and the possibilities are the name of that mare'may be missing from the Hurdle race. Silver March who is engaged in the Wilson Stakes is credited with running four furlongs on two occasions in 48$. He is trained by the veteran "Billy" Holmes, who has turned out many a winnei. Sid Re id will pilot Ratana in the Waverley Cup, and the gelding should not suffer in such capable hands. There is a report current that "Billy" Young will ride Epworth at Waverley, but this scribe doubts it, as that horseman is booked to steer Kilrain in the Champion Plate at Trentham on Monday.
