NAURU ISLAND
Nafuru, or Pleasant Island, which has been captured from f he Germans, and the British flag hoisted, lies 165 miles off Ocean Island, ami was a German possession, Dist'-ict-Oommis-sioner Wastrok being in command. The island is/ leased to the Pacific ' Phosphates Company, w- o <have a gang of 2000 labourers (CV:rese and Polynesians) on the: island tt4mg out phosphates, and about 100 Europeans. In fine weather the export from the island is 6000 tons per v/rj< For over a year past, however, t.'ie weather has been the worst *»v«r seen for over fifty years, the monsoons never having set in. and a westerly wind (when shipping is only ' possible) being a rare occurrence. It is estimated that there is enough phosphates oh the island to last for the next fifty years at ihe p t*ent rate of shipment. There now 20,000 tons of dried phosphates on the island; awaiting shi:>m.f:fii. i o shipping having arrived owing to the war.
