[By Cicero.] Winners would not be hard to pick if one could rely on "form," but unfortunately it works out most unsatisfactory in most cases. However, with irecent racing as a guide, "punters" should do very well at the Hawke's Bay Spring Meeting, which opens tomorrow. The stable mates—Golden Water and Otatara—will start hot favorites for the Tomoana Hack Hurdles. The latter showed a return to form by running a good second to Hereford last week. Of the ten acceptors for the Maiden Huck, Intelligible and Hymen will possibly be best backed. Submersion was backed for a lot of money at Wanganui, but met with interference. He may be m ore fortunate in the Fla'xitiere Hack to-morrow.
Despite a penalty of 71bs, it will take an exceptionally good one to lower Reputation's colors in the Guineas, and- Football may be the hardest to beat.
Nocturnal and Asterias should run well in the Stakes. Quite a number of those figuring in the Spring Handicap claim engagement in the New Zealand Cup, and as the winner does not incur a penalty for that important event, a great race should be witnessed. Sea Pink, Expect, and Passadena should be well supported. A good field af "hacks" accepted for the Waitapu Handicap. Steinhall and Garance have recent form to recommend them. Nine figure in the-Final Handicap, and as Adroit ran a fair race at Wangamii, he should do batter to-morrow.
